Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as a public speechwriter. She was the creator of Feminist Frequency the website which provides commentary and videos on portrayals of women in popular cultural. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American journalist and critic who has won prizes for her work, is an activist blogger. Feminist Frequency is a not-for profit site for education that investigates the representation of women in pop stories of culture - was created and directed by Sarkeesian. The challenge of destroying stereotypes regarding women is her main focus. However, Sarkeesian also discusses issues of specifically targeted harassment online against women and other minorities that are excluded. Holding a master's degree in social and political thought at York University Sarkeesian is also an extremely sought-after public presenter and has presented speech at the TEDxWomen Festival and The United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. When she was a student at the university, Sarkeesian became interested in the issues surrounding gender identity and women's rights from a young age. Someone who hoped to start a web-series examining the representation of gender in video games, she was targeted by the internet campaign. The harassment didn't discourage her. It only strengthened her as a journalist who is feminist. She is a recipient of many awards for her contributions to the cause of feminism. Anita Sarkeesian is an award nominated media critic as well as the co-founder of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit focused on the portrayal of women in pop media narratives.
